Historical “Burchiello”

ECOMUSEUM SITE UNDER CONSTRUCTION

One of the typical fishing boats of the lake once used by the local fishermen will be recovered and displayed on the lake shore next to the seat of the Ecomuseum. It is the “burchiello”, in the local dialect näv or burcél, with a flat-bottomed hull, a crescent-shaped profile, and with raised bow and stern pointing up so as not to be a stumbling block for the floating fishing nets. Until the early 20th century, this kind of boat was propelled only by oars or sails, the central one called “quadra” (i.e. “squared”) and the bow one called “fiocco” (i.e. “jib”) (or trinchett).

A wooden framing, called “galaverna”, was placed on the keel as a sort of transverse spines into which the circles or supporting beams – usually 5, 7 or 9 – of the cover fitted. The circles granted an ideal support for tarpaulin covers, providing protection from rain and sun.
