Late-medieval building with monolithic lintel

Several buildings in the area of the lakes and also on the Isola Pescatori display a characteristic architectonical solution for entrance gates, built with massive gabled lintels, triangular-shaped or, like in this case, polygonal with 5 sides, made from a single block of stone and for this reason called “monolithic”. They are supported by jambs made from several stone blocks carefully shaped and placed so as to ensure the static seal in a sequence that includes, starting from the top, horizontal abutments, shaped towards the door opening, vertical piers, which are usually made from two parallelepiped blocks, one on each side, intersected by large horizontal blocks and closed as well by large horizontal blocks at the bottom, serving as pedestals.

The lintel is decorated with engraved patterns. In this case we find, within a triangular frame, a central line from which two segments depart, creating a sort of stylized tree.

This type of lintel is supposed to date back to the late-medieval period (14th-15th century). In this particular building, also the window, besides the entrance door, is characterized by monolithic lintel and jambs.
