Fisheries economy, characterized by several typical activities, has been integrated throughout the last two centuries with Tourism economy, hosting Italian and foreign visitors in private houses and high-quality hotels, along with taverns and inns in the past, and restaurants, cafés and ice-cream shops nowadays. High-quality food service, which in several cases was started by families of fishermen, offering fresh fish to the guests, has gradually grown to become today the main commercial activity on the Island. Along with restaurants, there also are seasonal commercial activities such as shops of souvenirs and local products. Currently, several private houses, which are no longer used by their owners, have been put on the short-term rental market, while most of the restaurants and commercial activities are run by owners who live elsewhere.
The small number of inhabitants during the winter is integrated by a larger number of former islanders and their heirs, who still own a house on the island, using it for weekly visits or short periods during the year, and still manifest their sentimental bond with the local community, both taking part in the remaining shared activities, such as popular and religious festivals, and taking care of and visiting the small local cemetery.
